Local German media celebrated the story of Ahmed Al‑Homsi, a young Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany as a teenager after a difficult journey from Syria, and has now become one of the youngest certified opticians in the country at just 22 years old.

According to rbb24, Al‑Homsi received official authorization last Friday to perform eye examinations and visual acuity tests. He now works as a senior optician in an ophthalmology clinic in Eberswalde (Barnim).

An Emotional Graduation Moment

His parents attended his graduation ceremony. Ahmed recalls: “It was a very emotional moment for me… I had to hold back my tears in front of my parents.”

From Syria to Germany… A Challenging Beginning

Ahmed’s father fled the war in 2014 via the Mediterranean Sea. A year later, he managed to bring his wife and children to Germany. Ahmed joined the eighth grade in Eberswalde but understood nothing at first. He explains: “The language was the biggest obstacle… not only German, but also Latin and Greek medical terms. It was very hard at the beginning, but if you really want something, you memorize it and you succeed.”

A Rare Achievement Among Refugees

Government data shows that 134 refugees and migrants have completed vocational training in East Brandenburg since 2015, including 32 Syrians. However, Ahmed is the only Syrian so far to obtain the prestigious Meister qualification in optometry — making him one of the youngest opticians in all of Germany.

Michaela Schmidt from the Chamber of Crafts notes that many refugees perform well in the practical exam, but the theoretical part is often difficult due to complex terminology.

Strong Support From His Employer

Ahmed received significant support from ophthalmologist René Hoffmann, who helped finance his training and took him on as a trainee despite already having enough apprentices. Hoffmann says: “He is extremely hardworking and humble. I hope he stays that way. He’s interested in the medical background and works well in a team. He’s simply a wonderful person.”

Ambitions Still Growing

Alongside his master’s training, Ahmed has already begun studying optometry at the university level. He hopes to complete his bachelor’s degree within two years.

He adds: “Eye clinics everywhere are full, and it’s hard to get appointments. We handle the preliminary examinations and help speed up the process.”

Ahmed Al‑Homsi’s journey stands as a powerful example of resilience, determination, and the ability of Syrian youth to rebuild their lives and excel despite immense challenges.
