Promoting Development and the Local Community
Homs is currently witnessing a new wave of community-driven initiatives that aim to rebuild the city and promote sustainable development from within. Local projects, such as street lighting and youth-led initiatives, are improving public safety, revitalizing neighborhoods, and creating new economic opportunities
At the institutional level, UN-Habitat has launched disaster risk reduction programs to strengthen community preparedness. These initiatives focus on training volunteers, developing proactive emergency plans, and raising awareness in informal neighborhoods. Meanwhile, FAO supports women’s empowerment in rural areas through literacy programs and Dimitra Clubs, enabling women farmers to participate more effectively in social and economic life
In the health sector, MedGlobal is leading recovery efforts by rehabilitating hospitals and clinics, deploying mobile medical teams, and training local healthcare staff. These interventions are restoring essential services and reinforcing the community’s resilience Community-based funding initiatives, such as the “Homs Wednesday” conference, have also played a key role, raising more than $13 million to support infrastructure and public services. Together, these efforts reflect Homs’ strong determination to recover and grow, combining local development, women’s empowerment, healthcare recovery, and disaster preparedness into a comprehensive vision for a sustainable future
