New Water Well Activated in Baba Amr to Improve Water Supply in Homs
The Homs Water Establishment, in
cooperation with Al‑Bunyan Humanitarian Association, has placed the Baba
Amr Martyrs Well into service inside the neighborhood’s public park as part of the
Homs Wednesday
initiative. The project aims to strengthen water supply and ensure more
reliable access for residents in an area that has suffered from severe water
shortages.
A 165‑Meter‑Deep
Well with High Pumping Capacity
Engineer Hatem Al‑Sabsi, Deputy
Director of the Homs Water Establishment, stated that the well was drilled to a
depth of 165 meters
and operates at a flow rate of 40 cubic meters per hour,
providing water for approximately 10,000 residents
in Baba Amr and nearby areas. He added that drilling, casing, and testing were
completed, along with the installation of a 20‑horsepower
submersible pump and a power generator to ensure continuous operation despite
frequent electricity outages.
An Urgent
Response to Water Shortages
Al‑Sabsi emphasized that
activating the well addresses the growing need for water in the neighborhood,
especially as key water sources in Homs—most notably Ain
Al‑Tannour Spring—have experienced significant declines in flow. He noted that
efforts continue to identify the most affected areas and coordinate with
organizations to secure additional support.
Community‑Driven
Support from Al‑Bunyan Association
Abdullah Ghannoum, Director of Al‑Bunyan
Humanitarian Association, explained that the organization conducted a needs
assessment for Baba Amr before fully funding the drilling and equipping of the
well, including the generator and control systems. He highlighted the
importance of long‑term strategic solutions, such as establishing coastal
desalination plants and transporting water to inland provinces, and affirmed
the association’s commitment to supporting water initiatives across Homs.
Growing Water
Challenges in Homs
Homs has faced increasing water
scarcity over the past two years due to recurring droughts and declining flow
from major water sources. Projects like the Baba Amr well have become essential
to ensuring reliable water access and improving public services for residents.
