The Al‑Khaldiyeh neighborhood in Homs is witnessing a renewed sense of life as residents welcome the holy month of Ramadan with hope and warmth, after years of displacement and destruction. The streets and markets are gradually regaining their vibrancy, reflecting the neighborhood’s steady recovery.

Bustling Markets and Traditional Flavors

A walk through the neighborhood reveals lively markets and shops offering a wide variety of traditional foods and drinks, including:

Traditional Ramadan beverages such as licorice drink, jallab, and apricot juice

These flavors, deeply rooted in the community’s memory, bring back cherished Ramadan traditions.

Residents Return and Life Slowly Restores

Resident Khaled Hashmeh shared that this is his second Ramadan back in the neighborhood with his family, noting that life is gradually returning despite remaining service gaps, thanks to community initiatives that support recovery.

Shop owner Mohammad Saer Al‑Attar, who reopened his family’s store founded in 1950 after a 14‑year closure, expressed joy at the revival of commercial activity, adding that conditions improve year after year, especially during Ramadan, which brings joy and optimism.

Reconstruction and Growing Activity

According to Mohammad Sari Khawouj, the neighborhood is experiencing increasing activity as more families return, alongside ongoing restoration and rebuilding efforts that have revived its streets and markets.

A Neighborhood of Historical and Spiritual Significance

Al‑Khaldiyeh holds historical and religious importance due to its proximity to the iconic Khalid ibn Al‑Walid Mosque, located at the northern entrance of the old city, making it a notable landmark for visitors.

From Destruction to Renewal

The neighborhood suffered extensive damage during the siege imposed by the former regime on Homs, leading to massive destruction and displacement. After liberation, gradual reconstruction efforts began, enabling residents to return and restoring social and commercial life.
